Totally random encounter. Met up with Malinda, who I've been emailing with about a Lumbee oral history project. Turns out she's sister to Ben, who I went to high school with and cousins with Lucy, one of my best friends from middle school. Her husband Willie is songwriter of "Strike at the Wind" songs as well as "I'm Proud to Be a Lumbee Indian" which just blew my mind. We spent a while catching up on people we both knew who I've mostly lost track of as well as local Robeson County issues, Eddie Hatcher, Lost Colony theory, Ulali, as well as her experiences as a new academic. It's a small world--funny how much Pembroke ties are what I associate with "home".
