Incredible day. Went to Borders again for "Wicked" drawing. Won chance for two, offered to person next to me who was from Washington, but she wanted some for 3 people. Worker there was surprised I spoke Spanish, had been to Chihuahua. Later told me cute guy had been signalling to me to give him the extra ticket, but didn't see him.

I had planned to eat brunch with Geza & Kathy but by the time I got my ticket and waited a while for bus, got there kind of late so Kathy was annoyed. Even more so when I told them I had to get downtown again by 2 so we couldn't have a proper sitdown meal. But it was still fun--little girls dressed up like butterfly and caterpillar. They ended up dropping me off at the door and I was one of the last ones in. The raffle drawer turned out to be the usher and she had been wondering where I was.

So the musical itself--wow! I had one of the best seats in the house so got to see up close. Ana Gasteyer from SNL starred as the witch. Was even more powerful than the book and had several twists that made it stronger. Nessarose, the sister, was in a wheelchair instead of being armless which made more sense with the magic slippers. Visual allusions to "Evita" (Galinda at Casa Rosada), Phantom of Opera (witch appearing in mirror), and mob scenes a la "Beauty and the Beast". More attention paid to love stories, less to animal liberation front which left motivation for conspiracy somewhat sketchy. Many puns and nods to Oz movie as well as digs at current political situation (one sure way to bring people together is to give them a really good enemy). Wasn't sure whether the ending was stronger or not. Incredible. Link to another recent Chicago review

Afterwards was rather giddy, noone picked up phone so couldn't share it. Waited around for bus to Kyler's concert, which was way up on the north side. Got confused with time change, then had a hard time finding it since I was looking for a club and it turned out to be someone's apartment with no sign or anything. It was pretty great though--it was intimate since she was cracking jokes, sometimes forgetting lyrics to older songs in which case her audience filled in the lyrics, several got up to sing backup and the singing itself was gorgeous. Two others from NC State who I recognized but wouldn't have known by name so took a while to place them. Sort of strange walking around Chicago hoping to find familiar faces, but the only ones I bump into are actually from NC...
