Back in Laurinburg. Was all ready to move into a new apartment for the semester, but Thursday it just hit me that applying to work at Outback Steakhouse and sitting in on classes with undergraduates was not going to help with the job hunt process. Can't sign a lease without knowing what's going to happen job-wise. I had an interview with Intel which would be really amazing if it worked out, but somehow I doubt I'll be able to get in without the PhD. Phone interviews are tricky. Another interview in California, another in Atlanta, see if anything pans out.

UNC classes were good--such a beautiful campus. Interesting dining set-up. Couldn't find Jamba Juice, turns out was next to ATM area. Then was waiting to get my order in when realized that the ATMs were really order kiosks. Can customize your smoothie, get boosts and pay so really nice technology.

So guess I'll try going through reading lists and doing fieldwork on my own while waiting to hear from jobs. Nerve-wrenching process...

Katrina such a crazy fuss--city below sea level practically destroyed and refugees all over, including Georgia Tech Colliseum.
Gas prices now same as milk prices per gallon.

Miles O'Brian promoted from space reporter to anchor on CNN. Reporting on Katrina, levee fixing by Army Corps of Engineering "It seems that they'll have to break a few more levees before they start fixing them. I don't quite understand it...but after all they ARE engineers". Would be funny if it weren't so tragic.
