At a podcasting conference at Duke this week. Pretty interesting--wasn't really aware of podcasting and only found out about the conference because danah boyd mentioned she was speaking there on her blog. Mimi Ito and a Ga Tech prof were on the same panel. Was afraid I would miss first day because of NYC trip, but got dates confused and was Tues and Wed after all. "People shouldn't associate it with ipods" speaker just said and that was my first reaction since I thought it was limited to people with ipods.
This morning lecture of legal stuff. Creative Commons, EFF, Open Media and RCIAA lawyer who got ragged on (intro with Darth Vader theme). Seemed very US focused and ignoring the fact that this is a global community. I brought this up during Q & A, asking about international jurisdiction and the moderator pointed out it could have taken up whole panel time or even a PhD Dissertation. The speakers seemed relieved to be taken off the hook with the question which I found a little worrisome in terms of the rise of globalization. Yeah, they can talk about piracy and copyright issues and losing money in the US, but walking down the street in Mexico and China, there's plenty of piracy going on and that amounts to a lot more.
Highlights:
"Screw npr, i can do this myself" mur lafferty
We're just 2 people who have 100,000 dollars in loans to pay off
I got into academia thinking I could change the world
Kelly Amienne, Eat Feed
"When it all comes down to it all I want to be is a DJ"
David Warner
"we have contests. we give away wine. we have no idea if that's illegal..."
fun to be part of a revolution
"when you succeed in killing both the roaches and the butterflies, it's hard to know what might have evolved..."
"one day there was a berlin wall and one day there wasn't" Jonathan Sterne
