WSJ 1/17/05: "Word Processora Offer Too Much Fancy Stuff: Basics Are What's Key" Apple showing off Pages, emphasized how easily the software could be used to combine pictures and text into fancy newaletters, brochures and school reports. In apple's wprds "Like you had a design team working round the clock" Apple's assumption seems to be that every user of a word-processing program is a frustrated graphic designer. .The more accurate notion, I think is that your average word-processing users are mediocre typists and miserable spellers, a downtrodden lot in need of all the help they can find simply getting words down on paper; spell-checking provided for me by Word is for me one of the towering achievements of modern science, right up there with satellites and ATMs.In fact Word has so ably democratized good typing and proper spelling that miss its steady helping hand when I'm using other programs including instant messaging. But Chhris Pratley, the product manager who thinks about these things for Microsoft, pointed out to me that spelling correction may be the last thing people need in an IM program.
