Contextual Design--everything I needed to know for my master's project one year later. So many diagrams get overwhelming though.

"Marketing never tells us any of the things we need to know," say product designers. But the people in marketing say, "We give them all kinds of data! They just refuse to use it." In fact, understanding a market is fundamentally different from understanding what to design into a system and the the data traditionally collected for marketing has limited usefulness for product design. Marketing needs to understand what people will buy and how people make buying decisions; designers need to understand what will help people do their work better while fitting into their lives and matching their culture...Designer's basic question: how can I structure a system to make people's work more efficient? Marketing techniques tend to characterize and scope the market, rather then describing the structure of its work, also generally assume you know what the questions are..As soon as design starts, no one knows what the questions are

Contextual Design: 5 models
flow: represents communication and coordination and coordination necessary to do work sequence: showing detailed work steps necessary to achieve an intent
artifact: showing the physical things created to support the work, along with their structure, usage and intent culture: representing constraints on the work caused by policy, culture, or values physical: showing physical structure of the work environment as it affects the work.

"Great leaders influence other people to become great leaders too. had to engage their minds with a mission and vision; their hearts with passion; their wills with the discipline, time, and effort to reach goals; and their consciences to do the right thing. "The secret is that it will do as many good things for you as for the people you are helping" from SHPE magazine.

Read "Senator's Daughter". Pretty powerful. Put a totally new spin on all the racial dynamics of the South. Strom Thurman ended up looking more sympathetic figure. Sad about her mom. She ended the book on a strange note, excusing her application into DAR and Daughters of Confederacy.

Already getting stircrazy in Laurinburg--too much internet and TV reruns and not enough time outside talking with people.
