Long day, eve of CHI. Presentations over, family feeling thought today felt like more of a waste. Debate between Amy and Bruce since B was calling Harry Potter fans clinical--such a psych perspective and then A defends the online community pov.

Schiavo finally died, almost two weeks with no water or food. Found site on disability rights--www.notdeadyet.org . Sort of ironic, she shares the headlines with Pope dying. Said he wanted life support at first but decided not to go to hospital and is fading fast. Everyone is so sad and acting as if the world will not survive without him, but the guy is 84 and has lead an incredibly full life. He's looked so down for so long and he carries the weight on his shoulders until the end; no retirement or rest.

Saw "Million-Dollar Baby" at Lenox Wednesday. Very graphic--not fond of fight scenes and torn about ending. Didn't like way priest was portrayed. Christopher Reeve wouldn't have approved of ending; going from Superman to paraplegic can't be easy. Comparison to putting down sick dog was analogy I wondered about with Schiavo case. They always tell you it's to prevent Fido from suffering but if it's a person, suffer away. But then there's always hope.

Thursday went to CoCaesar's Palace which was noisy and looked like people had fun. Then to Latino identity workshop. Mostly Ga State students. Not really as inspiring as hoped, but at least got to talk to people. Was talking about wanting to change things in Mexico when this guy started about how someone he knew had changed in El Salvador--turned out it was Patricio Vela, Charles Vela's son who I had met 8 yrs before! It was so funny. He'd been here 1 1/2 yrs and I didn't know it. Oh well. Felt good to meet someone from before.
