From Clueless in Academe--I suspect that there are many buried or hidden forms of intellectualism that do not get channeled into academic work but might if educators were more alert about drawing on them. My own premise as a teacher is that inside every street-smart student--is a latent intellectual trying to break out, and that it is my job to tease out that latent person and help it articulate itself in a more public form. (on writer who grew up Fundamentalist Christian and switched to queer theorist, saying that religious arguments helped him in academic argumental discourse)
